Non-Player Characters
Non player characters (NPCs) in Ultima Online can be found throughtout the world. Town shops have npcs as merchants, banks have minters and bankers, skill guilds have guildmasters to train skills, town criers proclaim newsworthy information. There are also Noblemen needing escorts, tillermen to sail your boats, and player vendors of different types.
Although animals, monsters and red brigands are technically npcs as well, this section does not cover them and all they encompass.
Interacting with NPCs is part of UO. The most common NPCs are the shopkeepers. Each shop has its own type of npc - Tailor and Weavers for tailoring shops, Armorers, Weaponsmiths, and Blacksmiths for smithy shops, and so on. These characters buy and sell items within their occupation. Many provide training in related skills.
To interact with the NPC you can use verbal commands from within two
tiles of the npc or access the npc gump by a single-click on the character
All Npcs respond to the following:
[name] time - the npc will tell you the time of day
[name] move - the npc will move one tile
Merchant Npcs
- commands:
[name] buy - a gump appears as two scrolls, showing the vendors inventory
The vendor's wares appear on the top left scroll. The item, its price and the quantity on the vendor is shown. Using the red tab on the right side, or the small arrows on the right, a player can scroll through the inventory.
To choose an item, double click it and it appears on the bottom scroll.
The bottom scroll will be the shopping order. Buying multiples of one item is made easy by the + - that appear after the item. The amount at the lines end is the total gold for the items on that line, not per item. Your total amount owing is shown on the bottom.
If this amount is over 2000gp, the vendor can take the amount from your bank box, provided it is there in gold (not check form). If it is under 2000gp, you will need the gold on your character (gold available). When you have placed your order, you can click the red wax stamp at the bottom to conclude the deal. The gold is removed and the items appear in your backpack.
If you are overweight, or at the max. 125 items, the last purchased items will appear at your feet.
[name] sell - works the reverse of buy. The gump that appears will list items you carry that the npc is willing to purchase. Vendors are limited in the gold they carry. Keep this in mind when selling items. While a response from the npc of 'You have nothing I would be interested in' may mean you have nothing to sell them, it is possible the vendor is simply out of gold for the time being (for example if you are trying to sell skullcaps to a tailor and they will not buy them, they are out of gold since this is an item they would buy).
[name] train, [name] teach - the npc will offer a list of skills they can train
[name] train [skill] - the npc will inform of the amount of gold needed to train. Any portion of this amount can be dropped on the vendor; training points received proportional to the gold given.
The vendor gump provides the same options and may be used anywhere from within 7 tiles of the vendor. Additionally, Tailors and Blacksmiths will show an option for Bulk Order Information if the player has minimal skill in tailoring/blacksmithy. Choosing this option on the gump will give you the time in hours until you can collect your next Bod.
Guildmaster
Guildmaster npcs will train skills using the same commands as above. You can also join the npc guild with [name] join. The guildmaster will inform you of the gold needed to join. Drop this amount on the vendor.
Noble characters
Noblemen can be found around the shard looking for escort. Again, they respond to typed commands within two tiles, the gump may be used from within 7 tiles.
Destination - the npc will inform the player where he/she needs to go.
I will take thee - This will accept the escort. The noble character will now follow you by foot and through gates. Once you have brought the escort to their destination, payment is given.
Bankers
Bankers and Minters have unusually good hearing. Standing outside the bank will usually be sufficient to interact with the bankers/minters.
bank - opens your bank box
bank balance, statement - the banker will give you your balance for gold in your bank. Cheques are not included in this total.
Check [amount] - creates a check in the amount specified within the bank box. Minimum 5000gp/maximum 1 000 000 gp
Withdraw [amount] - creates a check for the amount specified in your backpack from banked gold.
Buy and Sell commands must be used within two tiles (typed or seven for gump) to execute.
Stablemasters
A place to stable your pets, limited to a max number of pets.
Claim - retrieves all pets stabled
Claim list - Lists all pets stabled. The player can then pick the pet to be retrieved.
Stable, Stall - gives a target; target pet to be stabled. You cannot stable a pack animal with items in its pack.
Tillermen
Steering every boat is a tillerman. The following commands can be used to navigate your vessel.
Forward - moves ship forward
Stop - stops current ship movement
Drop anchor - toggles ship movement off
Raise anchor - toggles ship movement on
Turn left - left turn
Left - moves the ship left
Turn right - right turn
Right - moves the ship right
Backward - move backward
Turn around - turn around and proceed
Player vendors are available on hybrid in two forms. One is used to sell items, the other to enhance a theme with different characters available to choose from. Information on selling vendors can be found here.
Themed Vendors.
By purchasing a Barkeep Contract from a Barkeeper, you can have a custom designed character for your business or home. The deeds can be as low as 1025gp, or as high as 6250gp, so shop around. Once you have the deed, stand on the tile you want the npc to stand on, and dbl click the deed. The npc appears beneath you. You do not get a target so be sure you are standing in the correct location.
| Now that you have your npc, it can be customized with clothes, title, sex and text. Single left click the npc |
|
Pick Manage Barkeep to bring up the customizing menu.

The first menu has options to customize what the vendor will say, what the vendor will look like and to dismiss the vendor. You will not receive a deed back.
Choosing Message Control will continue to this menu

Your vendor may hold up to five messages, to be spoken when key words are said nearby. The message and key words are set by you with the option 'Add or change a message and keyword.' You may also set what your vendor will say when tipped. The following menus are used for these tasks.

Choosing 'customize your barkeep' from the first menu continues to this gump

An assortment of titles can be picked from three gump pages. Those characters that will sell food and drink are indicated. These are the only items that can be bought from these vendors.

Choose appearance to continue to the clothing gumps. Here you can choose what your vendor will wear and hold.

The gumps appears open on the upper torso page.
To remove an item already on your vendor:
Choose the item's group from the left (lower torso for pants or skirts, for example), click the remove box on the bottom and pick okay on the bottom left.
To add an item:
Select the group on the left, select the item from that group, click okay.
To color an item:
Choose the group for the item to be colored, choose color. A standard dye screen appears to choose from. You cannot pick a clothing item and color it at the same time. You must first select the item and then color it. You cannot color the held items nor hair.
Male/Female is a toggle between the sexes.
